First Visit

It is a good idea to schedule your child’s first visit to the dentist around his or her first birthday. It can be as early as you’d like, but after their first tooth shows up is a good time.

Many children are apprehensive about their first trip to the dentist, so if you start them early they are more apt to have a positive experience.

You should prepare your child for their first visit by expressing the positive reasons for good dental care. Avoid using terms like “drill, needle or pull” as they will trigger fear in the child’s mind.

A typical first dental appointment will include some or all of the following:

  • A general exam of the teeth, jaw, gums and oral tissues to monitor growth and development and observe any problem areas.
  • A gentle cleaning, which includes polishing teeth and removing plaque, tartar and stains.
  • Newest Digital X-rays
  • A demonstration of proper dental hygiene practices.
